There is a place in San Benedetto del Tronto that has been there, in the center of the center for 150 years, since Giuseppe Sciarra, one of the first coffee makers in the town, decided to open his shop under the house on that newly traced street then called “dell’Ancoraggio” because it flowed right onto the beach where the fishing boats anchored.
It was 1862, all the streets of the village were marked with the names of animals (via della Rana, della Passera, del Grillo, del Merlo etc.) and the shops present, mostly taverns and wine or liquor shops, had adapted.
The sign that Giuseppe Sciarra had chosen for his cafeteria was that of the Balena.A century and a half of history has passed between the tables of that cafe.Several generations of Sciarra have succeeded in running the restaurant, until 1992, when the now elderly Mario Sciarra, a few years before his death, decided to sell the management to another family able to reinvigorate and continue the prestigious business which passed to Adriano Ciccarelli.
This year, therefore, both anniversaries occur, and it is for this reason that the Sciarra and Ciccarelli families have decided to celebrate (after having already cut the fateful cake a few months ago), with a gift dedicated to all San Benedetto, tourists and aficionados On Wednesday 22 August at 9.30 pm, outside the Gran Caffè Sciarra, an evening event will be organized by Cinzia Carboni in collaboration with the Cultural Association I Places of Writing, with the participation of some actors of the Compagnia Teatrale Ribalta Picena (Catia Zappasodi, Giancarlo Brandimarte, Maria Baldini and Lorenzo Nico) and directed by Riccardo Sciarra. of photos and period films, interspersed with the delicious sonnets by Bice Piacentini.

Everything started....
Our history has distant roots and speaks of distant places.
Babbo Adriano took over the then Sports Bar in Amandola, a small village at the foot of the Sibillini Mountains, in 1972.
His resourcefulness, his stubbornness and great dedication to work led the Bar dello Sport, then Casa del Gelato, to soon become a point of reference not only for the newborn Mountain Community but for the entire province of Ascoli Piceno, which at that time it also contained the territory of Fermo.
Many customers, who became dear friends over the years, went to the Casa del Gelato and found a wonderful showcase with over 50 flavors of ice cream rigorously obtained from natural products, which today we call at km 0, raw materials of the highest quality that reflected the great respect that Babbo Adriano had towards work and his beloved customers.
Life in the bar in the unforgettable eighties flowed full of success and great satisfaction. History then repeated itself in 1992, when with his indisputable foresight, he decided to invest in San Benedetto del Tronto, a wonderful town that welcomed him with so much respect and love, taking over the Caffè Sciarra already a symbol of the city.
The success has been repeated by consolidating his figure as one of the leading professionals in the sector in recent decades. Unfortunately, Babbo Adriano left us too soon. Our children, Michele and Manuela, with the help of our mother, tried to continue in his name and with the help of his many teachings his project, remembering him every day with so much love.

Special Sommelier Michele
The term sommelier derives from the middle French saumalier.
Originally the meaning was driver of beasts of burden; over time changed into a food attendant, then into a cellarman. The Latin origin is identified in the word sagma, which means soma and, by extension, the load that pack animals carry.
The figure of the sommelier is different from that of the wine taster, although professional wine tasting as well as the knowledge and culture of wines are common.
